Intermission: Cruise Fair

Presentation: Stephen Culhane will be giving a presentation on the Squamish Language.

To quote Stephen: “One important thing is to recognize our passion for the waters of the Salish Sea, the spectacular wilderness and outdoors we sail through, and the peoples who have been stewards of these places for thousands of years. Squamish territory and  language encompasses Howe Sound, Indian Arm (Tsiel-Waututh speak this language), and the water areas north of the Fraser in Greater Vancouver. This would include a few basic elements one could use in a brief ceremony to show respect for the waters, cultures, languages, and peoples here for so long as an appropriate acknowledgement of the pleasures we receive from being here.

According to Tsiel-Waututh beliefs, it would also help for winds, hoped for weather, and better days while out on the water.  At the very least, it is an appropriate step toward reconciliation and respect for First Nation’s concerns of appropriation of lands and waters by colonial peoples.”
